Vaccine

With the outbreak of meningitis in Kent making headline news, we appreciate that many parents might be concerned for their children.

We’d like to reassure patients that our Trust has not seen any rise in the number of cases at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, and the risk in our area remains low.

Parents should be advised that there is no additional meningitis B vaccination programme being rolled out for our region, as this is just for the Kent area in response to the outbreak. We therefore cannot offer meningitis vaccinations outside of the normal NHS vaccination schedule.

Look out for the signs

Meningitis symptoms can develop quickly, so it’s important to act immediately if you have any signs or symptoms in yourself or anyone else.

If not treated quickly, meningitis can be very serious. Look out for symptoms such as:

  • a high temperature (fever)
  • being sick
  • a headache
  • a rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (but a rash will not always develop)
  • a stiff neck
  • a dislike of bright lights
  • drowsiness or unresponsiveness
  • seizures (fits)

You might not see every symptom, and they can come in any order. Trust your instincts and call 999 for an ambulance or go to your nearest A&E immediately if you think you or someone you look after could have meningitis or sepsis.

Keep up to date on your vaccinations

It’s important that vaccines are given on time for the best protection, but if you or your child missed a vaccine, contact us to catch up.
